Opinion and Analysis
Zip-puh-dee-do-dah my oh my what a wonderful day! Plenty of action comin’ our way! Minnesota gubernatorial primaries opens the door to regular citizen voters. The BIG question is Can the Middle Minnesotans take back their government from the far left and the far right?
Can the rural Democrats make their voices heard and take back the party from the flake left city democrats? Will normal Republican voters turn out in great enough numbers to give the party a candidate that can win? Things can change fast but as of this writing, it appears that both parties will have hotly contested gubernatorial primaries.
The Democrats in a way are the most interesting. How did Murphy get the endorsement? Congressman Walz seemed fiercely dedicated to gaining the nod. And, who was out there waiting in the woods? None other than the AG. Hm-m! How will that primary vote split? Will Ms. Murphy and Ms. Swanson chew off enough votes to leave Mr. Walz the winner?
We believe the Walz ticket is the strongest followed closely by the Swanson ticket. Perhaps the Murphy ticket the most susceptible to losing to the GOP; especially, if Mr. Pawlenty prevails in the Republican primary.
We believe that on the GOP side Mr. Jonson is the weaker candidate and the most vulnerable of the five. The big question being whether enough ordinary Republicans will get out to vote. Mr. Pawlenty then might be the strongest candidate to take on whoever ekes out the DFL slot.
Mr. Pawlenty likely would draw much more financing than Mr. Johnson and is aiming his voter appeal in the general to the middle. But his big hurdle will be to overcome the right-wingers who see cause over victory and who are more motivated to vote than ordinary Republican-leaning Joe and Jane Citizen.
Is party discipline breaking down? The Republicans never really had any but the Democrats seemed to have some until this convention. We believe it’s a good omen that both parties are whacking it out in primaries. The parties have gone too far in both directions in our view and the ordinary citizens should comprise a jury on both parties.
The rural Democrats must step up to the plate and change the ways their city brethren ru(i)n this state. The Republican moderates en masse need to come back to the fray and send a message to the controlling far right losers.
Minnesota’s future is on the line.
Please vote intelligently.
