Who would have thunk that little ole St. Paul was a sanctuary city! It’s true. The example St. Paul set for the nation should be carried through to today’s sanctuary cities.
St. Paul was a sanctuary city way back in the 1930’s. The problem wasn’t then illegal immigrants, it was the criminal element. Yes, major criminals of the day spent there R&R’s in peaceful St. Paul without fear of the law. In fact, the law protected them. There was a catch, however, the criminals had to register and agree to a code of conduct. No criminal activity whatsoever in St. Paul. It was all right to rob banks in Minneapolis but not St. Paul. That was where one of the original doctrines of hot pursuit occurred across the Lake Street bridge that spanned the Mississippi River between the two cities. The Minneapolis police chasing the criminals and the criminals fleeing as fast as they could for sanctuary in St. Paul.
There is one incident where a lady complained to police that someone stole her purse. The St. Paul police called in the criminal leaders and reminded them that this kind of behavior was not tolerated in St. Paul. The criminals apologized, alleged none of theirs were involved and that they would straighten out the matter. That night so the story goes her purse was deposited on the steps of the police department along with the thief who stole it. Issue resolved.
St. Paul was peaceful in those days and it was fashionable for the higher society to mingle with the likes of the nation’s most wanted. Ah, for the good ole days!
The moral of this story might be that today’s sanctuary cities could benefit from following St. Paul’s lead. Have all your illegals register with the police department and agree not to disturb the peace.
Back to the future again.
